When all the balancing and shaping is complete, the final step would be to apply color if desired and then burnish and French polish the wood to achieve a finished product. When all the parts are finished, it is time to install horsehair on the bow stick.

Hairing the Bow

Use diagram 4.57 as a guide. To hair a bow, a hank of horse hair (A) is selected and combed so that all hairs are parallel to each other. The end of the hank is then tied and wedged securely into a box-shaped cutout (mortise) at the tip of the bow (B). The hair is held in place by a wooden, wedge-shaped plug (C) that is accurately cut to exactly fit the space remaining in the cutout box. This plug holds the hair in place.
